North Kitsap School District superintendent Laurynn Evans was contacted by law enforcement Jan. 26 as part of an investigation into removing signs in the 34500 block of Little Boston Road that are in opposition to the district’s bond proposal, a Kitsap County sheriff’s news release says.
The sheriff’s probable cause papers say Scott Henden and Kim Gerlach have been spending their own money to put out the signs that they say keep getting stolen or damaged. The signs urge a no vote against the capital bond measure Feb. 13. The morning of Jan. 26, the two decided to hide by the location where the signs kept getting stolen.
Henden was hiding in brush on Little Boston Road around 6:30 a.m. when a woman removed two signs and placed them in the back of her pickup, the release states. Henden called Gerlach, who followed the woman in a vehicle. The woman was described as white, in her 50s with medium-length blonde hair. They reported the pickup is a newer gray Ford Ranger, and they got its license plate number. The woman, whom the two allege is Evans, was later spotted parking at the Sons of Norway in Poulsbo.
KSCO contacted the woman. She confirmed she owns the pickup but was not involved in the thefts, the news release says. The agency said Evans is listed as a person of interest. Information, statements and evidence regarding the campaign sign thefts will be forwarded to the county Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for review.
