Island photographer Pete Saloutos takes thousands of shots every year, all over the world.

But he didn’t have to go far from Bainbridge for one of his most prized photographs.

“When I opened that shot up, I knew it was it,” Saloutos said.

The photograph came from an afternoon with fellow islander Karen Sella, shooting around the Point White Pier off the south end of the island.

“That’s my personal favorite shot,” Saloutos said. “I shot about 300 of that sequence of her barefoot prancing around the pier.”

Saloutos often works for Nikon, a photography company, and last year he submitted the photo of Sella, among many others, to them. He soon got a call from a Nikon official asking to use one of his photos in a calendar. He didn’t even have to ask which one they liked. He knew.

But for Saloutos, the excitement wasn’t for the inclusion in Nikon’s calendar, it was for his own. He has put out a calendar each year since 1977. In recent years, however, his calendar projects have taken on a special meaning.

Each year Saloutos produces a calendar to raise money for Arms Around Bainbridge, a local cause benefiting islanders in need of financial help to cover medical bills.

“All (the people supported through Arms Around Bainbridge) have either had no insurance or have been underinsured,” Saloutos said.

The money raised by selling the calendar — all of it — goes to the cause.

It’s something that Saloutos thinks about every year as he travels for work.

“I know that a calendar requires a seasonal quality to it,” he said. “I am shooting all the time, for a variety of different things, and I am thinking about this calendar all year.”

“I am already thinking about 2014,” Saloutos added.

The latest calendar was printed through a connection of the nonprofit’s treasurer, Orlando Boleda. With help from the KP Corporation, Saloutos said that the calendar is the best they’ve ever produced.

“It’s a much bigger calendar,” he said. “They did a superb job in printing it.”

The Arms Around Bainbridge calendars are currently available at island stores including Town & Country Market, the Roby King Gallery, Island Fitness, the Bainbridge Island Aquatics Center, Eagle Harbor Books, Silver Screen Video and the Village Music Center in Lynwood.
