A brazen thief stripped a necklace off a mannequin in a crowded gallery during last week’s First Friday Art Walk and got away with the stolen art piece before anyone noticed.

The theft was reported to the Bainbridge Island Police Department Monday.

Employees at the Island Gallery in downtown Winslow said the necklace, made by an artist in Spain, was last seen draped around the neck of a mannequin in the gallery on Friday, May 1.

The gallery reported that while two employees were at the front of the business, someone “very cleverly” removed the necklace from the mannequin amidst a group of people who were milling around the gallery and looking at art.

The theft was noticed as the owner was leaving the gallery.

The Bergamo necklace, made by artist Begona Rentero, was valued at $225. A photograph of the necklace can be seen on the gallery’s website.
