Adopting a short-term rental law and subsidizing fees for affordable housing projects are the main two items on the Bainbridge Island City Council agenda Oct. 10.
It starts at 6 p.m. at City Hall and on Zoom.
Regarding short-term rentals, the new law would require owners to obtain certificates that would impose operational standards and provide penalties.
Such rentals have become popular in recent years through platforms such as Airbnb. While they have economic and tourism benefits, there also can be issues with quality of life for neighbors, and it impacts housing stock, the law says. The law will help the city receive lodging tax funds.
To encourage affordable housing projects, the city will look at a law that would use a tiered system to offset land use permit fees. The system would only be available for nonprofits.
On the consent agenda:
The city plans to transfer the Pine Way Public Trail easement to the Bainbridge Island Metro Parks and Recreation District.
The council plans to accept an almost $9.6 million loan at 2.25% for the Winslow Water Tank Replacement Project from the state Department of Health Drinking Water Revolving Fund.
The council will spend almost $62,000 on curb ramps and a crosswalk on Sportsman Club Road at Woodward and Winslow Way at the ravine.
It also will adopt an ordinance to authorize waivers of water and sewer connection and participation fees and subsidies for certain affordable housing projects.
