Commander Sue Shultz carried out her final duty for the Bainbridge Island Police Department Monday as she packed up her office and cleaned out her desk.

Assisted by the city’s Finance Director Ellen Schroer, Shultz  hauled off her personal items while shaking hands and saying goodbye to her fellow officers. Her official last day will be Wednesday, Jan. 2.

Shultz leaves the department after resigning earlier this month in the wake of an investigation that placed her on administrative leave. The investigation was sparked by allegations from two female police officers who claimed Shultz discriminated against them because of their gender, and they claimed they were treated more harshly than their male counterparts.

The investigation did find that there was tension between Shultz and the two officers, but did not find any evidence of gender bias.

Shultz leaves the Bainbridge Island Police Department after serving nearly five years on the force. She came to Bainbridge in 2007 and was promoted to commander in 2010.

Shultz had indicated she wanted to stay on the force in a letter to the city responding to the investigation.

City Manager Doug Schulze, however, announced that the commander would be resigning after the two had reached a mutual decision.
