Sign-ups start for Field’s End summer writers’ classes

Registration will open Sunday, May 22 for two summer writers’ classes offered by Field’s End, “Marketing to Agents or Publishers,” and “Unleash Your Creative Beast,” a teen writing workshop.

“Marketing Your Book to Agents or Publishers” with instructor Alice B. Acheson will focus on creating query letters and synopses for finished books or partial manuscripts.

Acheson, a Friday Harbor resident, has negotiated book contracts, sold subsidiary rights and edited and publicized books. She is the recipient of the Literary Market Place Outside Services Award for Advertising, Promotion and Publicity. As an editor at a major New York City publisher, she read the “slush” pile and spotted the “go/no-go” elements of a project.

While much of the class centers on fiction, the process can benefit nonfiction writers working on memoirs, biographies or other creative nonfiction.

The class is 1 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, June 30; and 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday, July 1. Tuition is $170.

Nevinski, of Bainbridge Island, will lead the teen writing workshop, “Unleash Your Creative Beast,” from 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesdays July 18, July 25 and Aug. 1.

Nevinski is the author of a teen story published in “Hunger Mountain,” adult short stories and several children’s books for the school market. She teaches writing and creativity workshops for kids, teens and adults, and has a master of fine arts from Vermont College of Fine Arts.

The class encourages teens to unleash their inner author and improve their fiction-writing skills, with a focus on dynamite openings, memorable characters and story structure. In a workshop format, the group will explore what works in published fiction and share some of their own pages. Students will receive a written critique. Teen writers at all levels are welcome, whether writing a short story, novel or graphic novel. Tuition is $120.

Both classes are limited to 12 students and will be held at the Bainbridge Public Library. Registration forms will be available at the library and Eagle Harbor Books or can be downloaded from www.fieldsend.org.
