The second phase of a new energy efficiency plan was recently completed at the Marge Williams Center in downtown Winslow, which saw the placement of solar panels atop the building.
The 30-panel array was mounted on the south slope of the roof, said Marge Williams board spokesman Douglas Crist, a location that boasts “outstanding solar exposure.”
“The array is projected to offset at least one-quarter of our energy needs through the year,” he said.
The system also supports local jobs, Crist added, as it will use only certified “Made In Washington” equipment, including microinverters by Blue Frog Solar/APsystems of Bainbridge Island and modules by iTek Energy of Bellingham. Blue Frog is reportedly providing their equipment at a substantial discount.
The installer was Puget Sound Solar of Seattle.
Phase One of the plan involved all lights in the building being replaced with more efficient LED fixtures, Crist said.
Phase Three, he said, will come in April, “when we replace the existing baseboard heating with a modern heat pump system — ductless downstairs, ducted upstairs. This will include air conditioning, so the building should be more comfortable year-round even while saving energy.”
