Second baseman Matt Frazee is third in balloting for the Metro’s MVP award.

The Metro all-league teams are in for baseball and fastpitch, and Bainbridge High School was well represented on both sides.

For his efforts this season, head coach Jayson Gore was named the co-coach of the year, along with Chuck Elvig from Ingraham. Gore led his team to a Metro League championship and the state tournament for the first time since taking over the program as head coach, but he said he had a little help.

Gore credited his staff of Larry Gonwick, Jon Brandt, Mike Benz and Greg Mesmer.

“I gotta thank the coaching staff,” he said. “They’ve sacrificed time with their families to be out there, so credit has to go to them.”

Gore was modest about his own coaching abilities.

“I didn’t do anything different (this year),” he said. “We just won. If the team wins, then we look good.”

Matt Frazee and C.J. Hall looked great this year, and they were named to the first team as an infielder and a utilityman, respectively.

Frazee finished the season with a batting average of .469, five home runs and 30 RBI. He didn’t strike out once during the season, and had an on-base percentage of .534 and a fielding percentage of .968 with just three errors at second base. Hall hit .322 with 16 RBI. On the mound, he went 6-2 with a 4.01 ERA and led the team with 36 strikeouts.

Frazee finished third in the MVP voting for the league behind catcher Max Kwan of Seattle Prep and pitcher David Roberts of Eastside Catholic, who won the award.

“In my opinion, Frazee should have been MVP,” Gore said. “He’s been carrying us all year.”

Frazee wasn’t too upset over his finish.

“It would have been nice to have,” he said. “But it’s hard to compare those positions, and Roberts had a great year.”

Jordan Schager and Zach Peach made the second team as a pitcher and an infielder respectively, while Ranger Sciacca, Brenden Gent, Robbie Stevenson and David Lantz were honorable mentions.

For fastpitch, Amanda Szarzynski, Stephanie Wagner and Karen Robinson were named to the All-Mountain team as infielders and pitcher, respectively. Chelsea Baker and Tabitha Mabrey were honorable mentions.

“It’s pretty cool,” Szarzynski said of her recognition. “I stepped up my performance this year, so it’s a great way to end my high school career on a good note.”

She was disappointed with not being able to get out of districts this year, but will take satisfaction in watching her teammates play as she will return to help out next year.

“Stephanie Wagner and Chelsea Baker were telling me how much they were going to miss playing next to me, and that means so much,” she said. “I’m glad that I’ve been able to help people while I’ve been here.”
