Emma Spickard of Bainbridge Island was awarded the University of Washington President’s Medal during the university’s annual Awards of Excellence ceremony.
Awards of Excellence are bestowed for achievements in teaching, mentoring, public service and staff support. Each year since 1932, the president of the university has presented the President’s Medal to one or two graduating seniors who have achieved the most distinguished academic record.
This year’s graduating senior class had more than 5,500 students. Spickard graduated with summa cum laude honors with a bachelor of science degree in public health/global health and honors.
Spickard’s past awards at the UW have included induction into Phi Beta Kappa, selection as a UW Husky 100, which recognizes students who have “made the most of their time at the UW,” as well as a recipient of the Bonderman Travel Fellowship.
Under the Bonderman, she will be traveling to South America and Asia for the next eight months. She plans to explore what health, healing and resilience look like within the context of culture and religion.
