Stephens House is celebrating its 10th anniversary in November.

The Bainbridge Island Special Needs Foundation opened a day program for adults with developmental disabilities at Stephens House in 2002. The need came about through a group of concerned parents of school-age children as they were nearing graduation from high school.

This fall marks the 10th anniversary of serving this frequently overlooked portion of our community. The foundation’s concern has been that most efforts to assist these young people stops as soon as they leave the public school system, so the nonprofit’s focus has been the transition years after leaving school. The foundation provides for their continuing needs of physical exercise, education and mental stimulation and social interaction, and creates a challenging, community-based program of activities.

Over the years the Day Program at Stephens House has evolved and now encompasses adults of all ages in an intergenerational approach, where newly graduated students share activities with members of their grandparent’s generation.

Stephens House will celebrate its successes with the whole community at a party from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10 at the Boys and Girls Club. There will be food and beverages, a birthday cake, and music by DJ Bob Winters.
