New ideas for “Preserving History & Nature at Strawberry Cannery Park” are featured in an exhibit at the Bainbridge Public Library, running through Jan. 20,. The exhibit was created by many islanders, including volunteer architects, historians, fisheries specialists and several community groups.
Following a design charette and planning sessions last year, the city has come up with two composite plans for the city park. Both emphasize restoring the shoreline to predevelopment conditions and passive use of the uplands.
The library exhibit promotes a more active use of the five-acre park’s shoreline and upland by detailing its history of boating and use as an industrial site during much of the 20th century, according to historian Gerald Elfendahl and architect Andy Rovelstad.
