Winning images from the 2009 Washington State High School Photography Competition will be on display during Bainbridge High School’s open house which starts at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 10. The exhibit features 39 images selected from 3,232 entries. Of the 39 winning photographs, six are from former Bainbridge High School students.
The traveling exhibit arrived this week after a monthlong showing at the Seattle Art Museum. From here, it will tour the state through the end of the year.
Three photographs were selected in 13 categories by a panel of judges, including commercial photographer Jimmy Chang, Jennifer Brendicke of Photographic Center Northwest and photographer and educator Ray Pfortner. The photos were judged on artistic expression, technical ability and presentation.
Winning photographers are Hannah Basile, whose detail of the ferry leaving the doc won first place in the black and white landscape division.
Lisa Schmist won third place for her superimposed face in jigsaw puzzle pieces. Mariah Walk’s graceful image of roses reflecting on off a table earned a third place nod in the still life category. Grace Salisbury took second place in the People Color division for her intriguing image of a hand holding a nest.
Leslie Boynton’s colorful image of a girl sitting at the Blakely mill won third place in the Portraits category. And Samantha Zwicker took second in the Digital Manipulation division.
Six of the winning images, including Boynton’s will be featured on Jones Soda Company bottles.
First place winners in each category received $100 and Best of Show winner Ian Ostericher of Peninsula won a Canon camera package worth $2,000.
