Bainbridge Island will soon greet its new police chief.

The Island’s new chief of police, Matthew Hamner, will officially be sworn in to duty at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 20 at city hall.

Hamner hails from Indianapolis where he was a lieutenant in the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. He has 23 years of experience in law enforcement.

Bainbridge Island has been without a police chief ever since former chief Jon Fehlman left the department for medical reasons in May 2012, and was placed on administrative leave shortly thereafter. Fehlman ultimately resigned in September 2012.

Interim Public Safety Director Larry Dickerson took the helm of the police department during Fehlman’s absence. Once Hamner dons an island badge, it will be the first time the island has had an official police chief, on duty, in more than year.
