The speed limit on Highway 305 near Agate Pass Bridge will be dropped from 45 mph to 35 mph as soon as Saturday, July 27, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.
The new slower speed is temporary, officials said, but needed to help keep drivers moving while contractor crews set up a containment system and repaint the Agate Pass Bridge.
Once the work is complete for the season, the speed limit on Highway 305 will return to 45 mph.
New speed limit signs may be posted as soon as Saturday, July 27.
The temporary speed reduction affects Highway 305 from Milepost 6.74 to Milepost 7.06, and officials said the lowered speed limit will be enforceable as soon signs are posted.
Painting of the Agate Pass span is expected to start July 31.
