BMA hands out music scholarships.
Try, try again is the mantra of every musician, and Trubee Davison’s third try paid off.
The young violinist took first place in Bainbridge Music and Arts’ string competition, after finishing second the last two years.
“I was really excited,” said Davison, a junior at Bainbridge High School. “Music and Arts is a really good experience to compete and get input from judges. That’s more important (than winning).”
Now in its 36th year, the annual scholarship competition honors excellence in voice, piano, strings, instruments, drama, dance, art and creative writing.
The top three finishers receive $500 to $200 for lesson costs.
“(The competition) allows kids to do something to show appreciation for what the parents have done for them, and get recognition for what they’ve done,” said BMA volunteer and competition organizer Cathy Knight.
“To me, (the scholarship program is) the most important thing BMA does because it does something for the community,” Knight said. “We are a bare-bones group getting these things done.”
On May 2, first-place musical winners gave a public recital at Rolling Bay Presbyterian Church. (For a list of first-place winners, see this article at www.bainbridgereview.com.)
Davison, who has studied violin for 12 years, played the lively first movement of Mozart’s No. 5 “Turkish concerto” in A major.
“(The piece) is deceptively easy-looking,” Davison said. “Mozart is so tricky because you have to focus on the details of the piece.”
The difficult Adagio opening has the player quickly shifting hand position to hit a note, followed by two high trills.
The cadenza, a virtuosic solo for the violin, challenges the player to “have the confidence to play it fast to get the buoyancy the piece provides,” Davison said.
For the competition, Davison’s teacher, Katherine Davies, advised him to “put more of yourself out there for the audience.”
“That’s exactly what he did,” she said. “He’s a good player and when he did that it was a great performance.”
