Islanders will get a unique opportunity to discuss their police department on Thursday at the first Bainbridge Island town hall meeting on police issues.

Two town hall meetings have been scheduled for the island community to talk directly to the man in charge, Interim Public Safety Director Larry Dickerson. Dickerson has taken lead of the police department in the absence of Jon Fehlman, who has been on leave over the summer and resigned as chief of police last week.

The public is invited to ask questions, comment and have a conversation with police department officials.

The first meeting will be at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20 in council chambers at city hall.

The second meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday Dec. 4, but the location is not yet determined.

In addition to the town hall meetings, Dickerson will also meet with focus groups in a citizens’ roundtable to discuss broad-based issues facing the community.

A citizen survey has also been implemented.

Each month, 20 islanders who have had contact with police officers will be sent a survey. The purpose of the survey is to obtain feedback on officers and the police department. The survey recipients will be selected at random.
