Bainbridge defeats its rival Holy Names, stays undefeated.

Even with the cold, the threat of rain during their match and concrete-like greens, the Bainbridge girls golf team put together some nice rounds to defeat the Holy Names Cougars 113-87 Tuesday at Wing Point.

Melanie Trygg shot her career best – a one-over 37 – for 35 Stableford points and earned the medalist spot for the match.

The senior co-captain bogeyed just one hole while scoring a birdie on the fifth hole.

“I’m hitting the ball really, really well,” she said. “It’s refreshing.

“I’ve been a little errant with the driver lately but I kept it inbounds today.”

Anna Bourland had an off day, shooting a 43 for 29 Stableford points.

She had one birdie and two pars, but triple bogeyed the first hole.

It’s the first time that she has not medaled for the Spartans this season.

“She’s a good player,” head coach Steve Nielsen said. “She’ll bounce back, but it’s neat for Melanie in her senior year to play her best round in the biggest match of the year.”

Ryan Nottingham followed with a 45 for 27 points – she had two pars on the day – while Peyton Lunzer shot a 50 for 22 points and Annalise Herr carded a 51 for 22 points.

The Cougars’ highest scorer was Kristin Tan, who shot a 41 for 31 points.

While the Spartans got a good performance from Trygg, they also caught a break when one of the Holy Names players had more than a triple bogey on a hole.

Under the Stableford scoring rules, a golfer is awarded no points when that happens and their score is thrown out.

“I don’t think they played as well as they wanted to,” Nielsen said.

Despite the bad weather (“It was a little ominous all day long,” Trygg said) they were still ready to take on their main competition as the Spartans go for their second straight regular season league title.

The Cougars beat them out last year for the Metro tournament championship.

“It definitely made me focus more and play harder just to have somebody that I’m working to beat the whole time.” Trygg said.

“They’re nice girls, but when we see those pink shirts we know” it’s time to play, Nielsen said. “They’ve had this highlighted on their calendars for a while.”

Against West Seattle on Monday, Bainbridge won as Bourland, Trygg and Nottingham all tied for the medalist spot with a 43.

Bainbridge hosts Eastside Catholic next Tuesday, then Bishop Blanchet Wednesday as they get ready for the Metro tournament Oct. 15-18.
