A 20-year-old Bainbridge woman and a 51-year-old Bainbridge man are still hospitalized this week, following a string of traffic collisions on Bainbridge Friday afternoon.

The woman, who was struck by a minivan while bicycling on State Route 305 at 1:38 p.m., is in serious but stable condition at Harborview, according to Bainbridge Deputy Police Chief Mark Duncan.

The man, David Ortiz, who was involved in a two-car collision on Miller Road at 3:17 p.m., is out of intensive care but still recovering from internal injuries at Harborview, according to acquaintance Chris Kelly.

Ortiz owns the Salmon Canyon Cafe in Lynwood Center, along with partner Shauna Sheridan.

Kelly, a frequent customer of the cafe, said she has been keeping in contact with Ortiz’s family, and has set up an account to benefit Ortiz. Donations can be made at Wells Fargo bank. The account is under Sheridan’s name.

Kelly said Ortiz is expected home by the weekend.

In all there were three major traffic collisions within two hours Friday afternoon, keeping the five on-duty police officers scrambling, and tying up traffic past 5 p.m.

“It was a crazy day,” Duncan said.

Police still aren’t sure what caused the bicyclist to swerve in front of the minivan on SR-305.

The van driver, a 61-year-old Bainbridge woman, her passenger, and several witnesses, told police that the woman was riding northbound north of Morgan Road at 1:38 p.m. when she made a sharp turn toward the center of the highway without signaling.

“It appeared she didn’t even look backwards and turned 90 degrees across the highway,” Duncan said.

The Pontiac minivan driving behind veered left to miss the cyclist, but collided with her near the centerline, Duncan said.

The woman was wearing a helmet but suffered head and spinal injuries and was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center. Headphones and an MP3 player were found in the roadway, suggesting the woman may have been listening to it at the time of the collision, according to a police release.

The bicycle was also carrying grocery bags, Duncan said.

SR-305 was closed during the investigation of the scene, and traffic was detoured on Koura Road.

At 3:06 p.m. a Subaru Forester traveling in congested traffic along Koura Road rearended a Nissan pickup truck.

No injuries were reported in the collision but the Subaru sustained significant damage and was towed to an automotive shop, according to a police report.

Duncan said an officer was investigating the accident on Koura Road when the sound of yet another crash was heard from the direction of Miller Road.

The collision is still under investigation, but Duncan said it appeared from early witness reports that Ortiz had been driving a Honda Civic southbound on Miller Road when he pulled onto the shoulder, apparently to make a U-turn.

A Jeep Cherokee, also traveling southbound, slammed into the driver’s side of the Honda as it made the turn, and both vehicles came to rest in a ditch on the west side of Miller Road.

Ortiz was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center.

A Kitsap County collision investigation unit was called in to examine the scene. Duncan said it may take several weeks for the unit’s report to be completed.

The collisions closed SR-305 until 5 p.m. Friday, and temporarily shut down Miller Road, causing long backups.
