Two candidates file for Bainbridge school board

A current Bainbridge Island school board member and a longtime director of a local preschool have filed as candidates for the school board.

A current Bainbridge Island school board member and a longtime director of a local preschool have filed as candidates for the school board.

Sheila Jakubik has filed as a candidate for the District 5 seat on the Bainbridge Island school board.

The District 5 position is held by Mary Curtis, who was elected to the post in 2005 and is now in her second term.

Jakubik is currently the director of Bethany Lutheran Preschool on Bainbridge Island, a position she has held since 2008.

According to her profile on Bethany Lutheran Preschool’s website, she has a master’s degree in teaching and is certified in special education and English. She has 10 years of teaching experience.

The District 5 seat carries a four-year term.

Mary Ellen “Mev” Hoberg has filed as a candidate for the District 3 board position.

Hoberg is currently the District 3 incumbent and the newest member of the school board. She was appointed to the position in April 2012 to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of John Tawresey.

The position carries a two-year unexpired term.

The five-member school board sets policy for the Bainbridge Island School District and also approves an annual budget for the district.

Candidate Filing Week started Monday, May 13 and ends Friday, May 17.
