The two drivers who were injured in a car crash Monday at the Agate Pass Bridge remain in care at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, hospital officials said Tuesday.

Both drivers were airlifted to Harborview following the collision that left them critically injured.

One driver, a Bainbridge Island man, 64, is currently in the Trauma Intensive Care Unit at the hospital.

The current condition of the other driver, a 75-year-old Bainbridge Island woman, is unknown.

The accident occurred at approximately 2:09 p.m. on Highway 305 between the Agate Pass Bridge and Reitan Road. A Kia Sedona minivan crossed the centerline and struck a Lexus sedan. The Lexus was knocked onto a guardrail while the Kia landed perpendicular in the middle of the highway, blocking traffic from both directions.

There were no additional passengers in either car.

Both drivers were extracted from their vehicles by island firefighters and rushed to the helicopter pad at the fire station on Madison Avenue. A total of 20 on- and off-duty firefighters responded to the crash.

Officials with the Bainbridge Island fire and police departments said that both drivers were suffered serious injuries.

Traffic was blocked for more than four hours on both sides of the bridge until it was reopened just before 6 p.m.

Island roads remained clogged with vehicles, however, until well after 7 p.m.

The investigation into the accident is continuing.
