The man who was detained last week after a 90-minute standoff with police outside Bainbridge High School was booked into Kitsap County Jail Thursday morning on allegations of stalking and violation of a protection order.

Robert Ellis Stevenson was arrested outside the Subway sandwich shop on High School Road at about 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6.

The 24-year-old Bainbridge Island man had been detained last week by police after a standoff outside Bainbridge High after he reportedly threatened to kill himself.

Last week’s standoff with police at BHS started after a student told school staff that a car was parked in an assigned space in the senior parking lot near the school’s tennis courts.

A campus security officer approached the car, and after the man inside the vehicle refused to move and displayed a Swiss Army pocket knife, school staff called 911.

Police said Stevenson, a former BHS student, refused to speak with officers or get out of his vehicle.

He later rolled down the passenger window and threw the knife out. Police also said that while officers tried to speak with him, he was making posts on Facebook that were considered by school officials to be threatening.

After Stevenson was taken into custody last week, he was evaluated by Kitsap Mental Health Services during a 72-hour mental health hold.

He was released after a physician determined he was not a danger to himself or others, and was not “gravely disabled.”

Authorities said Stevenson has a history of mental illness, but the episode at Bainbridge High was attributed largely to substance abuse.

Stevenson was booked into the county jail at 12:53 a.m. Thursday and his court date was set for 10:45 a.m. the same day.

Bail was set at $20,000.
