UPDATE | Broken sewer pipe spilled 400,000 gallons of raw sewage into Puget Sound

Approximately 400,000 to 450,000 gallons of raw sewage was dumped into Puget Sound after a break sewer main Friday, Bainbridge Island City Manager Doug Schulze said Sunday afternoon.

Approximately 400,000 to 450,000 gallons of raw sewage was dumped into Puget Sound after a break in a sewer main Friday, Bainbridge Island City Manager Doug Schulze said Sunday afternoon.

City officials had earlier thought the sewer break happened Saturday.

But in an update Sunday, Schulze said sewer plant data indicates the force main rupture occurred around 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 30.

The broken main was fixed by 10 a.m. Sunday by a city work crew during low tide.

Beaches along Eagle Harbor were closed to swimming, shellfish harvesting and other activities Saturday.

The city is advising that human and pets should avoid contact with water in Eagle Harbor until warning signs have been removed from beaches. That will most likely happen in one week, Schulze said.
