UPDATE | Ferry Puyallup gone from Bainbridge route ‘until further notice’

The ferry M/V Puyallup will be off the Bainbridge Island-Seattle route "until further notice," Lynne Griffith, assistant secretary of Washington State Ferries announced in her weekly WSF update Friday.

The ferry M/V Puyallup will be off the Bainbridge Island-Seattle route “until further notice,” Lynne Griffith, assistant secretary of Washington State Ferries announced in her weekly WSF update Friday.

Griffith said repairs to the ferry, which hit an underwater cable or chain late Tuesday while sailing between Bainbridge and Seattle, will take several weeks.

Significant damage to the propeller shaft seal was found during a diver inspection Tuesday night.

“The vessel will need to be put into dry dock to assess the damage and make repairs,” Griffith said in her report. “This is a tough situation since one of the other Jumbo Mark II ferries, the Wenatchee, is also out of service for maintenance.”

The M/V Wenatchee is not scheduled to return to service until the week of Dec. 21.

WSF said several routes will be operating on reduced capacity, and Griffith also said that travelers on the Bainbridge-Seattle route should plan for delays, allow extra time for travel, or consider riding as a walk-on passenger.
