Ashley Mathews’ name will be on the Primary Election ballot, despite her dropping out of the race for the District 2 North Ward seat on the Bainbridge Island City Council.

Three candidates filed to run for the position during Filing Week in May; incumbent Councilman Kol Medina, Kevin Fetterly and Mathews.

Kitsap County Elections Manager David E. Frisk said that the county was not told in time of Mathews dropping out of the race.

“The last day for a candidate to withdraw from a race was May 20,” Frisk said. “We did not receive a withdrawal request from candidate Ashley Mathews prior to the withdrawal date.”

“Ballots were printed with Ms. Mathews’ name weeks ago and are in the mail to voters,” he added.

Election officials said this week they still had not been notified that Mathews had dropped out of the race.

Mathews did not respond to an earlier email and phone call from the Review about her candidacy, and she was a no-show at a forum at Bainbridge Island City Hall last week, where the League of Women Voters of Kitsap announced that she would not participate because she was pulling out of the race.

Under Washington state’s Top Two Primary, the two candidates with the most votes in August’s Primary will advance to November’s General Election.

Election officials said state law dictates for the deadline for a candidate to withdraw is the Monday after Filing Week and doesn’t give anyone the option of opting out of the General Election.

Medina was elected to the Bainbridge council in November 2015 and also currently serves as Bainbridge’s council-appointed mayor.

Fetterly is taking a second shot at elected office. He ran for the District 7 North Ward position against Joe Deets in November 2017; Deets won with 65 percent of the vote, while Fetterly finished with 34 percent.
