The bicyclist found dead at Fort Ward Park Wednesday had been reported missing from a celebratory get-together the night before, according to Bainbridge police.

The deceased, a 20-year-old man, has not been identified.

The death doesn’t appear to be suspicious, said Bainbridge Island Police Chief Matthew Hamner.

Hamner said the cause of death would be determined by the Kitsap County Coroner’s Office. Bainbridge investigators expect to learn Thursday how the man died.

Assistant Chief Luke Carpenter of the Bainbridge Island Fire Department said the fire department and police were notified at 6:18 a.m. Wednesday that a body had been found in the park.

The man was found dead next to a bicycle on the paved trail that leads to the upper parking lot at the park.

Hamner said he could not say much about the case, given the early stage of the investigation.

“Anything at this point would be speculation,” Hamner said.

Police were called sometime around midnight Tuesday with a report that the man had left the get-together and had not returned. There was no mention of any fight or dispute that happened before his departure from the gathering.

Hamner said police searched the Fort Ward area but did not find the missing man.

“There was nothing to indicate that he was in danger,” Hamner said. “There was no indication of any foul play when he was reported missing.”
