UPDATE | Man shot by police in Winslow jailed for first-degree assault

The man who was shot in downtown Winslow Wednesday by Bainbridge police after fleeing from the scene of a police call near Ordway Elementary has been identified as Brandon Thomas Roberts.

Roberts, 42, of Port Orchard, was booked into Kitsap County Jail on a charge of first-degree assault with a deadly weapon after he allegedly hit a Bainbridge police officer with his car while running from police at Ordway Wednesday afternoon.

Roberts also faces charges of second-degree felony theft.

Bail was set at $1 million on the assault charge.

Bainbridge police were called to Ordway after who was a passenger in Roberts’ Ford Mustang had a drug overdose.

Bainbridge Island Police Chief Matthew Hamner said earlier that officers responding to Ordway’s parking lot found a man, later identified as Roberts, attempting to resuscitate the woman, who was on the ground near Roberts’ vehicle.

Roberts went back to his car and sat in the Mustang as life-saving efforts continued on his woman passenger, but he sped away — striking a Bainbridge officer during his escape — when police tried to talk to him after the woman was revived.

Roberts then led officers on a short chase that eventually ended next to Winslow Green.

Witnesses said they heard two shots fired after police tried to get Roberts out of his vehicle and he refused police commands.

The shooting remains under investigation. The Bremerton Police Department is leading the probe.

The Bainbridge officer who shot Roberts was placed on administrative leave late Wednesday.
