Those who opposed the Visconsi project, and those who wanted to see the new shopping center built at the corner of High School Road and Highway 305, were tight-lipped Thursday after the city of Bainbridge Island’s hearing examiner gave the thumbs up to the project.

Most said it was just too soon to talk.

Charlie Wenzlau, the Bainbridge-based architect hired to design the development, said that he had only seen the decision minutes before the Review received the examiner’s decision.

Wenzlau decided he would like to have a chance to digest the ruling before he made a response.

Planning Commissioner Maradel Gale, who drafted the Planning Commission’s rejection of the proposed development, had not seen the decision yet and was not able to respond.

Ron Peltier of Islanders for Responsible Development, the organization which appealed the development’s SEPA Review and brought it under examination in January, had likewise not received the decision yet.

He said he was disappointed, but would also like to see the examiner’s comments before he commented.

Bradley Goldberg, director of development for Visconsi Companies, did not immediately respond to an email from the Review late Thursday.

Bainbridge Island Mayor Anne Blair could also not be reached for comment Thursday.
