The person aboard a boat who is shooting at the Bainbridge Island shoreline is near the Washington State Ferries shipyard near the eastern end of Eagle Harbor, Bainbridge police said late Saturday.
Authorities have asked islanders to avoid the shoreline along Eagle Harbor, as the person on a vessel in the harbor continues to fire at the shoreline and at police responding to the scene.
Personnel from other law enforcement agencies continued to stream onto the island just before 10 p.m. Saturday in response to the gunfire.
City officials announced an “active shooter” was in the Eagle Harbor area at approximately 9:30 p.m. Saturday night.
On several social media websites, some islanders reported they had heard gunshots coming from the Eagle Harbor area, which is just south of downtown Winslow and is home to the Bainbridge Island Ferry Terminal.
One islander, on the Bainbridge Island Fire Department’s Facebook page, posted this: “We see everything and no police or Sheriff yet. He keeps loading and shooting. This has been going on for an hour. Where is the response.”
The post was made just before 10 p.m.
Said another poster, on Facebook: “Im on my boat at Eagle Harbor Marina and just heard 6 shots and a “[expletive] you cops “
Some on social media said they initially thought the noise was fireworks.
