Repairs have been completed at Bainbridge Island Ferry Terminal after a vandal damaged the door to the terminal’s overhead walkway early Friday morning.
Washington State Ferries had to direct walk-on passengers to the outside walkway for departing ferries after the vandalism incident, which resulted in the door being boarded up until it could be repaired Monday.
The vandalism incident occurred just after midnight when police were called to the ferry terminal at 12:24 a.m. Sept. 26 after a man was seen breaking out windows at the front door.
According to court documents, police saw a man who matched the description of the vandal get into a dark-colored sedan with a woman and leave the terminal area.
Bainbridge police stopped the sedan in the 700 block of Winslow Way. Police said the driver did not immediately pull over, but eventually stopped in the middle of the street.
An officer found the driver, a 24-year-old Tumwater man, had red eyes and chapped or burned lips. Police said he was slow and unresponsive to officers, and the woman passenger in the car told officers they had been smoking marijuana laced with “sativa.”
Officers saw a bong in the back seat, and the woman also showed police a small glass pipe she said they had been using.
After field sobriety tests, the driver was arrested for driving under the influence. He was then taken to the Suquamish Police Station and tested by a sheriff’s deputy who is a drug recognition expert.
The driver was then taken to Harrison Hospital after police received a search warrant for a blood test, then booked into Kitsap County Jail for DUI.
The man was charged with DUI on Friday in Kitsap County District Court.
WSF said Monday it had not yet completed an estimate of the damage and the cost of repairs at the Bainbridge terminal.
