Police blotter
Bainbridge Police reported the following incidents:
JUNE 5
10:35 a.m. A Sakai Intermediate School administrator reported that someone had cut about 25 wires in a Qwest service box on the corner of New Brooklyn Road and Sportsman Club Road. The damage had disabled the school’s security system and school security personnel had provided overnight coverage. Service was restored. No suspects.
2:21 p.m. A school bus driver reported the license plate number of a vehicle that had passed his bus while the stop paddle and lights were activated. When contacted the driver said she was on her way to a funeral at the time and rushing to catch a ferry, and had not seen the bus.
2:57 p.m. An employee at a High School Road business told police he had seen a suspect conceal a bottle of cough syrup and walk out of the store without paying. When confronted by the employee outside of the store, the suspect threw the bottle on the ground and ran. The employee had already been contacted by the suspect’s probation officer and positively identified the suspect from a photo the officer sent. The report was forwarded to the probation officer.
4:55 p.m. A vehicle was stopped for speeding on Hidden Cove Road. The driver, a Poulsbo woman, had a suspended license. She was cited and released.
10:06 p.m. A non-injury collision was reported at SR-305 and High School Road. At the scene the driver of a white Honda said her car had been rear-ended by a red Toyota while she was stopped in a left turn lane on High School Road. An officer contacted the driver of the Toyota. She was swaying heavily, slurring her speech and, when asked for her license produced a Visa card. The driver eventually supplied the officer with a license and proof of insurance but no vehicle registration. The woman admitted she had rear-ended the Honda and that the traffic light had been red. She said she had only drunk one glass of wine, but failed two field sobriety tests and was arrested for driving under the influence. A three-quarters empty wine bottle was recovered from her car. The woman’s brother came to pick her up, and an officer asked the woman if she had any more questions. “Why do you have to be such a hardass?” she said.
JUNE 6
7:36 a.m. A driver was stopped on Day Road after a records check showed his license suspended. The man could not provide proof of insurance and did not have a required ignition interlock. He was cited for driving while suspended, violation of ignition interlock and failure to provide proof of insurance.
11:16 a.m. A Bainbridge marine unit, along with Coast Guard air support and a Central Kitsap Fire unit, responded to Dyes Inlet where to women were reported in the water near a capsized kayak. The women were recovered by Central Kitsap Fire and taken to a hospital for treatment of mild hypothermia.
6:47 p.m. A Poulsbo driver was stopped on Miller Road for driving with a suspended license. He was cited and released.
10:10 p.m. An officer with a radar gun clocked a vehicle traveling 47 mph in a 30 mph zone on New Brooklyn Road. The officer followed the vehicle, noting that its license plate light was not functional, and saw it make a turn onto High School Road without signaling. The officer stopped the vehicle in the McDonald’s parking lot and contacted the juvenile driver and three teenage passengers. The driver’s eyes were bloodshot and he smelled heavily of intoxicants but denied having drunk any alcohol. The driver agreed to a breath alcohol test, but when the officer returned from his patrol car with the device, he changed his mind and said he would prefer to walk a straight line. The driver said he had used Listerine earlier that evening, but eventually admitted to having drunk a beer earlier during “field day” at Bainbridge High School. He provided a breath test, which read .068. The driver was arrested and booked at the station for minor operating a vehicle after consuming alcohol. He was released to his parents.
JUNE 7
4:10 p.m. A Bainbridge man was taken to Harborview Hospital after wrecking his bicycle on a dirt lane along the Shepard Way easement. The man said he was ejected from his bicycle after striking a pole in the center of the track that is meant to keep out vehicular traffic. Based on scuff marks and spilled beer from bottles that broken in the man’s backpack upon impact, an officer determined the man had sailed about 25 feet before hitting the ground. The officer noted the pole was covered by tall grass. The man had lost consciousness and was taken to Harborview by aid.
10:26 p.m. Residents reported that an explosive had been detonated in a porta-potty near the softball field at Bainbridge High School. One resident said the blast had shaken his house and scared his children to tears. When officers arrived smoke was still wafting from the “Honey Bucket” and its door and various other parts were scattered on the ground nearby. Inside the plastic structure an officer found at least 100 pieces of wire strewn on the floor and a large piece of duct tape, consistent with a homemade “sparkler bomb.” School district staff were contacted. No suspects.
JUNE 8
11:44 a.m. A resident reported his boat and mooring buoy stolen from Agate Pass. He had last seen the boat and buoy June 6. The boat was described as a 14-foot Duroboat skiff with 15 horsepower Nissan outboard valued at $15,000. The resident said he did not believe the mooring line had broken. He said he had searched the area by kayak with no luck. No suspects.
8:09 p.m. A van was stopped on SR-305 near Seabold Church Road for improperly displayed license plates. The front plate was sitting behind the vehicle’s windshield. A records check showed the plates had expired in 2007, but the officer noted that a 2008 tab held together by scotch tape was stuck to the rear plate. The van’s driver claimed she was in the process of buying the vehicle and had no knowledge of the switched tab. The driver’s license was suspended and she was cited for driving while suspended and driving with altered plates.
