Wind knocks out power to Bucklin Hill homes; sailboat runs aground

A windstorm rattled Bainbridge Island Monday night, knocking out power to several Bucklin Hill homes.

A spokesperson said Puget Sound Energy expects to have power restored to all island residences by noon Tuesday.

The windstorm has also interrupted foot ferry service at the Hood Canal bridge. The bridge is closed for construction.

The National Weather Service is characterizing the spring storm as a “unusually vigorous late-season frontal system.” A gale warning was issued Monday afternoon for western Washington and a wind advisory remained in effect Tuesday morning. Winds are expected to calm Tuesday afternoon.

Bainbridge fire and police boats helped pull a 22-foot Catalina sailboat out of Murden Cove Monday night, after it became stuck in the mud.

According to Bainbridge Harbormaster Tami Allen, the sailboat’s skipper, a Hoodsport man, had turned into Murden Cove on the east side of Bainbrigde to avoid rough weather.

“He ducked out of the storm not knowing that Murden Cove can be incredibly shallow,” Allen said.

After the boat became mired in the mud, the mariner lit a flare, Allen said. Several shoreline residents saw the flare and called 911.

A Bainbridge police boat and an inflatable fire boat responded. The inflatable was able to reach the sailboat in shallow water.

The sailboat was guided into Eagle Harbor and moored safely at the public dock by 11 p.m., Allen said.
