Kitsap County Commissioners approved a contract Aug. 2 with Clark Construction to build a new North Kitsap Service Center off Bond Road that will include both a road operations facility to improve maintenance support for unincorporated areas of NK and a household hazardous waste collection facility to serve all local residents.

The purpose of the facility is to support North Road District maintenance operations and to support NK and Bainbridge Island with a collection and packaging facility for household products such as paint, batteries, automotive fluids, mercury-bearing lamps/bulbs and household cleaning products, per the project website. The current North District road maintenance facilities exist on 2.95 acres at the intersection of Highways 305 and 30. Most of the buildings on the site date to the late 1950s, and one structure dates to the 1920s.

“There is very little room to store required equipment, tools and materials which deem the facilities obsolete,” the website states. “In addition, significant traffic volume increases over the last forty years make access into and out of the facilities very difficult, even dangerous during peak travel times. Relocating the shop is necessary to ensure that Public Works can continue to provide Kitsap citizens with efficient and cost-effective services.”

Crews are anticipated to begin clearing trees and grading the site within the next three weeks, a news release states. Construction is estimated to be complete by March of 2025.
