Annamarie “Mia” Geist Mann

Annamarie “Mia” Geist Mann, age 89, of Bainbridge Island, died May 22 at her home.

She was born Dec. 6, 1913 in Minneapolis, Minn., to Emil Geist and Augusta Ohage.

She attended Carleton College, and graduated in 1935 from the University of Minnesota. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.

She studied at the University of Munich, then trained at Massachusetts General Hospital in the treatment of dyslexic children.

Before moving to Seattle, she and her husband, Frederick M. Mann, made their home in Cambridge, Mass., San Francisco, Calif., and in Marin County, Calif.

In 1954 they moved to Seattle, where he served as university architect.

She developed a lasting interest in the beauty of her adopted city. She initiated and helped realize the Seattle Street Tree program and the summer monthly Bicycle Sunday program.

She served on the Municipal Art Commission’s (now the Seattle Arts Commission) Street Beautification Committee, as well as on Forward Thrust. She was an active board member of the Lighthouse for the Blind, the World Affairs Council, the Citizens’ Planning Committee, Historic Seattle and the Street Tree Advisory Board. She was a member of the Sunset Club, the Elizabeth Fischer Orthopedic Guild, and the Committee of 33.

The Manns moved to Bainbridge Island in 1976.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years in April 2002. She is survived by children Grace M. Smith, Mary M. Gregory, Frederick T. and Richard E. Mann; and five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

At her request, no service will be held. Remembrances may be made to the Children’s Orthopedic Hospital and Medical Center Summer Camp Programs.
