Anthony “Tony” Joseph Stanton

October 13, 1960 – January 25, 2025

Anthony Joseph (known by all as Tony) Stanton, a true Bainbridge Islander, peacefully passed away on January 25, 2025 at Tacoma General after a long battle with cancer and with family by his side.

Tony was born in Glendale, California on October 13th, 1960, and moved with his parents, Jack and Dorothy Stanton, in 1969 to Bainbridge Island. The family lived in Eagledale near Tony’s sister and brother-in-law, Roseanne and Bob Stafford, and their family. Tony graduated from O’Dea High School and went on to finish his education at Eastern Washington University. In 1986 he began his working career with Bainbridge Island contractor, Fairbanks Construction, and retired from the company 33 years later. A dedicated and beloved employee, Tad Fairbanks said of Tony, “He didn’t complain – about anything. He was a guy who was passionate about his job and was willing to do whatever it took to make it happen.” Outside of work, Tony was well known in the Winslow community, especially along his walking path to and from work, and local merchants knew him by name. Over the years, Tony witnessed the island grow and change, and always had news to share about long-time islanders, businesses coming and going, and the new and evolving face of Bainbridge Island. Tony was known as a sports aficionado and loved a good conversation about “stats,” the winners and losers of games, as well as all the “would’ves, could’ves and should’ves!” Tony was beset with cerebral palsy at birth, but all who came to know him admired his strong will, resilience, and the positive attitude he maintained with the challenges of his disability throughout his life.

Tony is survived by his brother Vince Stanton (Port Gamble, WA), sister Roseanne Stafford (Puyallup, WA), and beloved and dedicated caregiver niece, Katie O’Mahony (Tacoma, WA).

Memorial services will be held on Friday, March 14th at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church, 1310 Madison Avenue North, Bainbridge Island, Washington, at 11 AM.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Tony can be made to Bainbridge’s One Call For All (onecallforall.org).
