Astrid Leonhard Christenson, 93
Astrid Maria Leonhard Christenson, age 93, died March 28 at Linden Grove Health Care Center in Puyallup.
She was born July 4, 1908 in Hjorring, Denmark, the youngest of seven children.
In 1929, she met her future husband, Eric Christenson of Goteborg, Sweden in 1929 on her second voyage to the United States. The two were married in Seattle on Jan. 6, 1930.
The couple lived in the Pleasant Beach area of Bainbridge, moving to Poulsbo in 1979.
Her husband worked for many years as a carpenter and painter on the island, and was employed by Washington State Ferries for 10 years.
She was a homemaker who enjoyed gardening and knitting. Many of her baby booties and blankets benefited the Children’s Orthopedic Hospital in Seattle.
She received several awards and recognition from the U.S. Air Force for her volunteer service during World War II, in the look-out tower on Bainbridge Island in what is now Battle Point Park.
She was a long-time member of the Rebecca Lodge, and also donated many pints of blood during her 70 years as a Kitsap County resident.
She was preceded in death by her husband Eric in 1987.
She is survived by daughters Anna Brinkman of El Centro, Calif. and Rosa Deonigi of Sumner, Wash.; son Erick W. Christenson of Poulsbo; granddaughters Sonja Grouleff Doll of Kent, Margo Grouleff Lawler of Marysville, Angela Deonigi Jennings of Auburn and Karen Brinkman Forrester of El Centro, Calif; grandsons Nels Peter Grouleff of Auburn, John Anthony Deonigi of Enumclaw, Kenneth Eric Deonigi of Sumner, Alan Brinkman of El Centro, Calif. and Eric R. Christenson of Bremerton; 19 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
No service will be held. Remembrances may be made to Children’s Orthopedic Hospital in Seattle, Good Samaritan Hospice in Puyallup, Bethany Lutheran Church on Bainbridge or First Lutheran Church in Poulsbo.
