Barbara Whirl Radtke

Bainbridge Island resident Barbara Whirl Radtke, age 84, died July 6 at Messenger House on Bainbridge Island.

She was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on July 7, 1918, the daughter of Harry and Juliet (Bennett) Whirl.

Following graduation from Washington Park High School, Racine, Wis., in 1937, she served in the U.S. Navy at Fort Ward on Bainbridge Island as a Radioman Second Class.

After leaving the service in 1945 and marrying Donald E. Radtke Jan. 8, 1946, in Racine, they settled on Bainbridge Island, where she worked for the phone company and Hemphill Oil.

Later she became an insurance adjuster in Seattle.

She liked to bowl, knit, tackle crossword puzzles and attend St. Barnabas Episcopal Church.

She is survived by her stepmother, Lucile Whirl, St. Petersburg, Fla.; son, Donald R. Radtke, Bainbridge Island; daughter, Julie Thompson, Bellingham; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren survive her.

At her request, there will be no services. Arrangements are under the direction of Kass Funeral Home, Bainbridge Island.
