Barney Rindal

January 5, 1935 - July 24, 2022

In the afternoon of July 24th 2022, Barney Frederick Rindal of Poulsbo, Washington, passed away at the age of 87. Barney, aka Sonny, or Jr., was born in Poulsbo in 1935 to Bjarne and Pauline Rindal.

The youngest of two children, Barney grew up along the shores of Liberty Bay with his sister, Ethelann. This is where his love of boating and adventure began to take shape.

High School afternoons often found him at the family’s feed store, building boats or cruising the town in a DIY convertible with his friends. Summers were spent fishing up and down the coast from Oregon to Alaska with his Uncle Leif Ness.

After graduation from North Kitsap High School in the spring of 1953, Barney attended the University of Washington for two years, then joined the Navy and trained as an aviator, Anti-submarine Warfare from 1955-59. Upon discharge from the Navy, he signed up with the Naval Reserves (retiring after 20 years of service). And he went back to finish his schooling. With college degrees in hand, he began teaching high school in both the Seattle School District and later Ocean Beach School District, retiring in 1997.

Barney loved the water and passed that passion on to his family. He always had a project. Whether helping others with their projects, working on his boats, or turning a van into a camper years before “Van-Life” was a thing. He was active. He cared deeply for family and friends and was quick to sacrifice. On a crossing from Hawaii to Washington he secretly, to the chagrin of the captain, took double night watches to let his then grown son have a good night sleep. He rarely ever sold anything of significant value, preferring to hand it down to family. His life was accompanied by the tune he was whistling.

Barney was preceded in death by his sister Ethelann Cannon and his parents Pauline and Bjarne. He is survived by his daughter, Alysson Rindal Bashey (Rehman Bashey) and children Lars and Mats; his son Brent Rindal (Katy Rindal) and children Gus, Britta and Gunnar, and Alysson and Brent’s mother, Carole Rindal. His wife Loretta, her son Braden Speed (Erica Speed) and children Jacob and Nathan; and her daughter Heather Emanuel (Michael Emanuel) and son Andrew Speed.

A private memorial will be held at a later date.
