Beverly Jeanne Johnson (Moe) of Bainbridge Island, Washington passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 11, 2019 at the age of 89.
She was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Olga and Alfred Johnson. Beverly (Bev) was the youngest of 6 children and was raised by her mother in Rushford, Minnesota. She never knew her father who died of an infection when she was infant. Times were tough, but Bev always looked back on her childhood with fond memories of her family and friends and a house full of music and games. After high school Bev followed in her siblings’ footsteps, moving Seattle where she attended nursing school at Virginia Mason Hospital.
Bev met her husband, Donald Moe, at The Blue Moon where she was on a blind date with another gentleman. They married in Washington D.C. on December 21, 1951, hours after Don graduated from the FBI Academy. They moved to Ithaca, NY a few days later where Don started his career with the FBI and Bev worked as a nurse. They were living in Don’s hometown of Entiat, Washington when Diane was born in 1954. From there they spent time in Denver and San Francisco before living in Modesto, California where Kirsten, Eric, and Julie were born between 1966 and 1970.
The family moved to Bainbridge Island in 1976. She immediately joined Welcome Wagon and Rolling Bay Presbyterian Church where she became a Stephens Minister. Bev loved music, participating actively in Bainbridge Music & Arts for more than 30 years. Bev was a regular at the pool where she attended exercise classes for years with a close group of friends. They could be found at The Treehouse when they weren’t at the pool, celebrating birthdays or just getting together for coffee. Bev had a keen interest in American history, was a whiz at crossword puzzles and Scrabble, loved British television, and spent hours in her yard. Bev made great huckleberry jam and always received requests from her kids for her raspberry pie.
Beverly is survived by her 4 children and 9 grandchildren: Diane (Moe) Wallingford (Moscow, Russia and Old Forge, NY), Kirsten (Moe) Steiert (Fairway, KS), Eric Moe (Bainbridge Island, WA), and Julie (Moe) Burke (Kirkland, WA), Maria (Wallingford) Sauerwald (Windham, NH), Linnette (Wallingford) Diaz (NY, NY), Nathan and Matthew Wallingford (Yorktown Heights, NY), Micah Wallingford (Ithaca, NY), Paige Castagno (Tyler, TX), Derek & Hailey Steiert (Fairway, KS), Calvin & Lincoln Moe (Bainbridge Island, WA), and Riley Burke (Kirkland, WA). She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 59 years, Donald Moe (1927-2011) as well as her dear brothers Ardel and Larry and dear sisters Dorothy, Joyce, and Opal.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service at Rolling Bay Presbyterian Church on Bainbridge Island on November 9, 2019 at 2 p.m. A reception will follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to
