Former Bainbridge Island resident D. Gordon Munro, 95, of Tracyton, the last surviving member of the Munro pioneer family of Crystal Springs, died Oct. 12 at Northwoods Lodge.
He was born Aug. 4, 1908, in the Crystal Springs neighborhood on Bainbridge Island, to parents Alexander McKenzie Munro and Janet (Montgomery) Munro.
He graduated from Winslow High School in 1925, then attended the University of Washington.
He married Marjorie Behrens on Aug. 4, 1935, at the Theodore Hilstad farm in Clear Creek near Silverdale.
He worked at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 30 years, retiring as toolmaker general foreman.
As toolmaker supervisor, he earned numerous awards and a patent for improvements to the grinding wheel dresser.
He designed and built other devices that went on ships to help win the second world war.
He built his own sailboat, and enjoyed boating to the San Juan Islands.
He was preceded in death by his wife on Oct. 7 of this year; brothers John, Duncan, William, George and James Munro; and sisters Mary, Euphemia, Isabel and Ann Janet. Survivors include numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Oct. 25 at Peninsula Bible Fellowship, with interment at Island Lake Cemetery.
