Longtime Bainbridge Island resident David Ferguson, age 88, died July 18 in Seattle.
He was born June 23, 1914 in Roland, Manitoba, Canada to Robert Ferguson and Grace Williamson.
He attended high school in Winnipeg, earning the Governor General’s Medal for academic excellence. He graduated from McGill University in Montreal with a degree in engineering.
He had an exemplary 35-year career with Alcan Aluminum, rising to chief operations officer of Alcan Corp. in Cleveland, Ohio.
His assignments included positions in Kinston, Ontario; Shawinigan Falls, Arvida and Montreal, Quebec and Cleveland.
While in Arvida, he managed what was then the largest aluminum smelter in the world, and frequently met with visiting dignitaries and heads of state, including Queen Elizabeth.
He retired to Bainbridge in 1974 and was an active member in the Wing Point Golf Club. He was fluent in French and English, and was very active in civic groups.
An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed curling, golf, hunting, fishing, bird watching and gardening. He also enjoyed cards, challenging his friends and family to poker, gin rummy, bridge and cribbage.
He is survived by three children: Kay Ferguson of Victoria, British Columbia; Ray Ferguson of Blairmore, Alberta and Norm Ferguson of Bainbridge Island.
A private service will be held. Remembrances may be made to the American Cancer Society.
