Longtime islander Dorothea H. Ekholm, age 90, died July 27 at her home on Bainbridge.
She was born July 16, 1912 in Kilgore, Texas to Tinsey Minta Stround and Samson Meadows, and attended Midland Texas High School.
During World War II, she volunteered as a nurse’s aid for the Red Cross. She married Fritziof Ekholm June 16, 1946 in Long Beach, Calif.
In addition to a career selling life insurance, she was a 48-year member of WAC, and a long-time member of the Bainbridge Island Republican Women and the Bainbridge Island Land Trust.
She attended Eagle Harbor congregational Church.
Preceding her in death were her husband Fritziof in 1948 and son Leander Arthur Ekholm in 1965.
She is survived by her son Stephen Allen Ekholm (wife Lorraine) of Bainbridge; two sisters, Ruth Sydes of Studio City, Calif., and Christine Lenehan of Apple Valley, Calif. and grandchildren Isaac and Timothy.
Services will be held 7 p.m. Aug. 4 at Eagle Harbor Congregational Church. Remembrances may be made to Hospice of Kitsap County or the Bainbridge Island Land Trust.
