Longtime island resident Harold “Bud” Wells, age 91, died Jan. 28 at Virginia Mason in Seattle of complications from a stroke.

He was born May 6, 1911, in Lafayette, Ore., to Delphia and James Wells. After graduating from Kalama High in 1929, he attended the University of Washington, earning a degree in chemistry.

Moving to Bainbridge Island in 1943, he worked at the commercial shipyard in Winslow as a manager in the electrical department until its closure in 1958. He then operated his own business until his retirement.

In 1934, he married Kathryn Mortenson, who preceded him in death in 1956. In 1959 he married Olga Durfee.

He enjoyed woodworking, keeping in contact with his many friends, satisfying his quest for knowledge, and being an amateur inventor.

Survivors include Olga, his wife of 43 years, and children Allan Wells of Bothell, Anne Reynoldson of Kirkland, Laine Durfee of Graham, Mark Durfee of Bainbridge Island and Marlene Peters of Puyallup; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

A graveside service for family members was held Jan. 31 at Kane Cemetery in Port Madison. A celebration of life will be held from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Feb. 1 at the Senior Center in Winslow.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances can be made to Children’s Hospital in Seattle.
