Hazel J. Schaffer

Hazel June Schaffer, age 83, of Bainbridge Island, died May 5 at Harrison Hospital in Bremerton.

She was born June 29, 1920, in Portland, Ore., to Virgil R. and Beatrice (Beach) King. She was raised in Portland, and came to Washington in 1940.

She was a homemaker. During World War II, she worked at Keyport Naval Undersea Warfare Center; there, she met her husband Otto J. Schaffer, who was serving in the Army.

In her later years, she was self-employed on Bainbridge Island. She enjoyed dancing, bingo, gardening, sewing, crafts and traveling. She was a member of Olympic Baptist Church of Edmonds, and Bremerton Ladies of Elk.

She is survived by daughter Candice M. (Randy) Jernigan of Silverdale; sons Ken Schaffer of Seattle and Jack Ring of Kingston; sister Jean Steele of Edmonds; and seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by hers sons Loren and Francis, and her daughter Beatrice.

Services will be at 11 a.m. May 11 at the Stone Chapel, Poulsbo, with graveside services at 3 p.m. that day at Floral Hills Cemetery in Lynnwood.
