Former islander Jane Hakes Nelson, age 82, died Feb. 23 at the Franke Tobey Jones Retirement Estates on Point Defiance in Tacoma.
She was born July 28, 1920 in St. Louis, Mo. She attended Stephens College and graduated in 1941 from Iowa State College with a B.S. in home economics/textiles and clothing.
She was a homemaker, wife and mother of two children. She enjoyed pets, sewing, cooking, gardening and antiques.
From January 1995 to October 2002, she and her husband, Bradley H. Nelson, lived at the Marina Condominium at Harbourside on Bainbridge. They then moved to Franke Tobey Jones Retirement Estates.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years; son Murray D. (Bonnie) Nelson of Fox Island; daughter Nona N. (Rick) McCown of Pittsburgh, Pa.; grandchildren Fiona N. (Todd) Walter of Mountain View, Calif., and Sara and Christopher McCown, of Pittsburgh and Colorado; and great-grandchildren Kiana and Reese Walter.
Services were held March 1 at Franke Toby Jones in Tacoma. Remembrances may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the American Heart Association. Arrangements were by Tuell-McKee Funeral Home in Tacoma.
