Janet M. Hanson

Janet Madeleine Hanson, age 83

Janet Madeleine Hanson died March 8. She was born August 1, 1929.

Raised in Wallace, Idaho, Janet attended Bush and Stanford. After reporting for the Spokesman Review she supported herself through the Art Students League of NY and a master’s at Teachers College Columbia.

She taught art until parenthood, thereafter continuing to paint and write. Post-divorce she moved to Bellevue and then to Winslow.

In early adulthood she forwent her driver’s license. Indefatigable, she persevered with bus, white cane, and finally walker. When worsening eyesight rendered painting impossible she freelanced, wrote short stories and, influenced by a year’s residence in Sicily, researched two historical novels.

Janet hiked, traveled, read, attended concerts and theater, and continued taking classes from French to Algebra. Volunteering encompassed Metro planning, Democrats, charities, and helping others as a natural aspect of life.

She is survived by her children: Lisa, Peter and Walter Lewis.

A celebration memorial will be at Eagle Harbor Congregational Church, probably midsummer.
