Jean W. Barrow

Jean W. Barrow, 93, died March 6 at Island Health and Rehabilitation Center after a brief illness.

She was born in June 1, 1910 in Seattle, and grew up in Columbia City. She was a graduate of Lincoln High School, and briefly attended Washington State College.

She married Ray Barrow on Jan. 31, 1933. She worked at Frederick and Nelson until retirement; she then trained to become a medical receptionist, and worked in that field until moving to Bainbridge Island 20 years ago.

She was an original tenant in Winslow Green and also at Virginia Villa, where she enjoyed her last years.

She was a familiar face for many years on her electric cart heading to downtown Winslow for a “shopping spree” or to the library to fulfill her need for reading. After giving up her cart, she would read endless book reviews and send her list to the library where the staff would send her books to read.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1965.

She is survived by her daughter Julie Callahan, her son Bill (Carol), grandsons Todd and Blake, and four great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held from 4-6 p.m. March 12 at Virginia Villa on High School Road. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Bainbridge Public Library in her memory.

Arrangements are under the direction of Kass Funeral Home.
