Jess Lee Hall Campbell, age 95, died Jan. 3 at Liberty Shores in Poulsbo.
She was born in Missoula, Mont. Aug. 20, 1906 and was raised in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.
She attended the University of Montana, where she joined Pi chapter of Delta Gamma. She later transferred to the University of Idaho. While there, she was the organist at Moscow’s Kenworthy Theatre, playing for silent movies.
In 1929, she flew to Chicago to begin studies at the Chicago Musical College under Charles Demarest as a full scholarship winner. She performed in Chicago churches and had a weekly program on WBBM radio as a singer and pianist.
She auditioned and was accepted into the American Guild of Organists and was a member of Phi Beta, a music and speech professional sorority.
In 1938 she married James A. Campbell of Seattle. A homemaker, she was active in her Delta Gamma alumni group, Saint Anne’s Guild of Epiphany parish and the Music and Arts Guild.
In 1962, the family moved to Bainbridge Island.
She was involved with Bainbridge Arts and Crafts, her Children’s Orthopedic Hospital Guild and as a docent at the Seattle Art Museum. She was a member of Wing Point Golf and Country Club.
She returned to musical performance as a faithful church organist for many years.
She was preceded in death by her husband Jim in 1963, and her brother Howell T. Hall in 1990.
She is survived by her daughter Pamela Vokolek, son Jamie R. Campbell, son-in-law William R. Vokolek, and four grandchildren.
At her request there will be no services. A private burial was held at Forest Cemetery in Coeur d’Alene.
Memorials may be made to Children’s Hospital, Seattle, the American Cancer Society or an organization of the donor’s choice.
