Joel Christian Colby
April 11, 1953 – June 15, 2011
Joel C. Colby died at home in University Place following a long illness from cancer which he faced with dignity and patience. He was an athlete then later a scholar. He excelled at football and basketball at Central Kitsap High School graduating in 1971. He spent 12 years working in the family trade in marine construction. Joel graduated from Seattle University in 1989 with a degree in Civil Engineering. He was licensed in 1995 as a Professional Engineer.
He was the major contributor and inventor to the new landing system for the Washington State Ferries, converting the creosote piling system to steel and concrete. As a professional engineer he worked for the State Ferries, Port of Tacoma and the City of Tacoma.
Joel enjoyed his family, friends, and the outdoors. He had a natural talent for playing guitar. He took great pleasure in active sports: water skiing, snow skiing, biking, golfing, and fishing. He enjoyed fellowship with friends in his recovery community on Bainbridge, in Bellevue and in the Tacoma area.
Joel C. is survived by his wife Martha Mitchell, his daughter Breena Sunshine Miller, a grandson Brandon Miller with another grandson coming soon of Mill Creek, his son (J.D.) James Deane Colby of Bainbridge Island, his brothers Peter L. Colby of Poulsbo and John Colby of Bremerton.
A celebration of life will be held at Scenic Beach State Park in the Emel House (South of Seabeck) July 10, 2011 at 12:00 pm. Family invites friends and relatives to join in memory of Joel.
