Margaret Carson Cooper van Gelder, age 90, died Jan. 18 at Island Health and Rehabilitation Center on Bainbridge Island.

She was born April 24, 1913, in Burnside, Ky., to George Matthews and Iris D. Agnes Frost Cooper.

She married Enno van Gelder on June 14, 1942, in David, Ky., where their five children were born. The family moved to Bristol, Tenn., in 1954. She and her husband moved to Winslow Co-housing on Bainbridge Island in 1994.

She was a member of State Street Methodist Church, Bristol, Va. She enjoyed singing, playing with children, gardening and beautiful dishes.

She is survived by one sister, Josephine Johnston, St. Petersburg, Fla.; children Marion Hinman of New Jersey, Elizabeth Deutsch of Germany, Katherine Glaser of Alaska, and Roger van Gelder of Bainbridge Island; 10 grandchildren, including two sons, Todd and Daniel Phillips, of her deceased daughter Johanna Phillips; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at Winslow Co-housing.
