Margaret Jane Haley

Margaret Jane “Peggy” Haley, 88, died Dec. 29 at her Bainbridge Island home.

She was born April 8, 1917, in Montreal, Canada, to James Waterson Reid and Margaret Jane McCord.

In her youth in Montreal, she was active in skiing, rowing and tennis, and worked as an Argyle Nurse at the Children’s Memorial Hospital in Montreal.

She and her husband moved to the Seattle area in 1946 and to Bainbridge Island in 1948.

Her career began aboard the Washington State Ferries in 1948. Through 1976, she she was the food supervisor on the Bainbridge and Bremerton routes. She retired from the ferries and was asked to reorganize the Wing Point Golf and Country Club, and she continued in their employment through 1986 until she re-retired.

She then gave her time at the Bainbridge Island Senior Center and held the posts of secretary-treasurer and bingo conductor. She was a member of the Evergreen Chorus, which sports green vests that she knit for each member. On Sundays, she sang in the choir at Eagle Harbor Congregational Church on Bainbridge Island, where she was a member.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Patrick Joseph Haley, in 1997.

She is survived by her children: Wayne (Maureeen) Haley and Joseph (Beverly) Haley; her brothers Jim Reid and John Reid; grandchildren Patrick (Carleene), Wayne (Tami), Brian (Diane), Joseph and Jason; and great-grandchildren Bree, Marinna, Clint, Anna and Sarah.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Jan. 6 at the Bainbridge Island Senior Center. Memorial contributions can be made to St. Judes Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105. Arrangements are by Kass & Cook Family Funeral Home on Bainbridge Island.
